World Economic Forum (25.06.2020) Money transfers are effective ways to protect those in financial difficulties due to COVID-19. In sub-Saharan Africa, over 80% of measures announced since the beginning of the pandemic are in the form of transfers. The pandemic has led many countries to strengthen their mobile money ecosystems and address specific constraints. But the risks of accelerating mobile money include cyber-risks and digital fraud.

Japan: COVID-19 Contact-Confirming Application (COCOA)

Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (26.06.2020) The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has developed a new coronavirus contact confirmation application (COCOA)  to help prevent the spread of new coronavirus infections. This application uses the smartphone's proximity communication function (Bluetooth), with the consent of the user himself, to ensure privacy so that they do not know each other. The user will receive the notification that they have come into contact with a person who is positive for the new coronavirus infection.

Switzerland: SwissCovid tracing app launched

swissinfo (25.06.2020) A contact tracing app is now available in Switzerland for newer smartphones to help tackle Covid-19.

If a person tests positive for coronavirus, everyone with whom that person was in contact in previous days – within two metres and for more than 15 minutes – is alerted via the app to isolate themselves and get tested.

Bangladesh : Distributing relief in a pandemic: Lessons learned about digital cash transfers during COVID-19

brac.net (14.05.2020) Almost 18 million people live in extreme poverty in Bangladesh. The impact of COVID-19 on their livelihoods has been catastrophic. Research by BIGD and PPRC shows a 73% drop in income in households living in extreme poverty when measured in the first week of April 2020 compared to two months prior. The biggest challenge during COVID-19 is how to get relief to these people, who often live in hard-to-reach areas.

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) on faster payment of Coronavirus COVID-19 Grants during Level 3 lockdown

Africanews (26.05.2020) Sunday’s announcement by His Excellency President Matamela Ramaphosa in response to the Corona virus epidemic brings much needed hope to the country. It also enables SASSA to accelerate the pace of paying out the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant. In terms of the move to level 3 of the lockdown, government services will commence full reopening from 01 June 2020.
