KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 — Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members aged 55 and 60 will be able to withdraw any amount from their account whenever they wish, starting January 2018. In a report by The Star, EPF chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan reportedly said this new arrangement was made possible due to an upgrade in the fund’s system. “Under the [current] EPF scheme, there are a number of restrictions on technology in terms of processing,” he was quoted saying.

The system was set to begin operations and the collection of employer and employee contributions on January 1, 2018, with payment of benefits from the fund to begin in January 2019. Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem said for a start, the new law would be enforced to provide Socso protection to self-employed taxi drivers and e-hailing service providers, including Uber and GrabCar, before being extended to other self-employment sectors.
