COVID-19 Response Underlines the Need for Portable Social Protection Programs

Center For Global Development (05.06.2020) The COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the need for a universal and portable social protection system that can uniquely verify people and deliver benefits efficiently and at scale. With few exceptions, most developing countries have a patchwork of social assistance programs that are targeted and delivered to its beneficiaries. In most cases, the programs are not portable, meaning those who live and work in a place other than where they are registered—like many who have migrated domestically for work—are unable to access benefits.

India: Government to launch online portal for stranded migrant workers

Business Standard News (26.04.2020) The Union government is going to launch an online portal for the migrant workers in the unorganised sector impacted due to a national lockdown imposed to check the spread of Covid-19 in India. The portal, which has been tentatively named by the labour and employment ministry as the National Portal for Covid-19 Affected Unorganised Migrant Workers, will gather the details of all the unorganised sector workers who are stranded in relief camps, residential or industrial clusters.

United States: California To Offer $500 ‘Stimulus Checks’ To Undocumented Immigrants

forbes.com (15.04.2020) California Governor Gavin Newsom announced today the creation of a $125 million Disaster Relief Fund to assist undocumented immigrants in the state who are struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund will disburse a one-time payment of $500 per adult (capped at $1,000 per household) to approximately 150,000 undocumented adult Californians to help with specific needs related to the coronavirus outbreak.

Qatar to pay workers in quarantine full salaries

All workers who are isolated or quarantined who are receiving treatment shall receive their basic salary and allowances regardless of whether they are entitled to sick leave or not. Three billion riyals ($824m) were set aside to support companies in paying their employees.
