62% of working-age Malaysians not covered by any formal social protection, says EPF

The Edge Markets (08.08.2018) The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has revealed that out of Malaysia's 22 million working-age population, 62% are self-employed, outside the formal labour force, and not covered by any form of social protection such as the EPF or government pension scheme.

With new tech, EPF to drop withdrawal limits | Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 — Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members aged 55 and 60 will be able to withdraw any amount from their account whenever they wish, starting January 2018. In a report by The Star, EPF chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan reportedly said this new arrangement was made possible due to an upgrade in the fund’s system. “Under the [current] EPF scheme, there are a number of restrictions on technology in terms of processing,” he was quoted saying.

The system was set to begin operations and the collection of employer and employee contributions on January 1, 2018, with payment of benefits from the fund to begin in January 2019.
