Australia’s creative economy: Is freelance the way of the future

Submitted by issadoc on Tue, 03/13/2018 - 11:19

heraldsun.com.au ( 29.05.2017) Freelance has long been regarded as a dirty word. For years, the very idea of flying solo has struck fear into the minds of nine-to-five professionals, for whom survival is dependent on a full-time income and four weeks of annual forced-leave-at-Christmas benefits. But technology-fuelled digital disruption is starting to change the shape of the Australian workforce.

While industrialization is an appealing path to growth for countries like Ethiopia, more nations should value the developmental potential sitting in front of them: Africa's large informal sector.

Gig economy workers need more choice not more flexibility

Submitted by ruggia on Wed, 07/12/2017 - 07:42

Financial Times (11.07. 2017) Government should encourage companies to improve employment options. Some view the gig economy as a flexible working arrangement, while others see it, if not straightforwardly as a form of exploitation, then as one that allows for very little employment protection. But if companies like Deliveroo or Uber were mandated to offer their workers a choice of employment options, wouldn’t this help ensure workers were being treated fairly?

Submitted by monitor on Fri, 05/12/2017 - 11:36

jdsupra.com (10.05.2017) Due to the calling of a snap general election, the Work and Pensions Committee has curtailed its inquiry and has now published its report on the gig economy and its use of self-employment. The report is somewhat damning of companies that utilise the gig economy model.
