Cyprus: Etek calls for adoption of ‘Vision Zero” strategy for no labour accidents

InCyprus (27.05.2019) In view of a recent spike in work related accidents the Technical Chamber (Etek) has expressed concern at the lack of a ‘safety culture’ on the island.  The Technical Chamber has placed health and safety high up on its list of priorities and intensified its efforts in this direction. As part of its participation in the Pancyprian Health and Safety Council, it recently submitted specific proposals to reduce the number of labour accidents and work related illnesses

Malaysia: Revitalising injured workers via certification

New Straits Times (15.05.2019) The International Labour Organisation estimated that globally, 2.3 million workers succumbed to occupational accidents and work-related diseases every year. In developing countries including Malaysia, this has emerged as a growing concern arising from the increasing number of work-related accidents which could result in deaths, injuries and major disabilities, sick leave, inability to work, temporary or permanent loss of jobs.

Organisations today stand committed to occupational safety

 Business Standard News (28.04.2019) Every year more than 2.78 million people die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases, a recent ILO report said. In addition, there are around 374 million non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses each year, many of these resulting in extended absences from work. The human cost of this adversity is vast and the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 3.94 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product each year.

New Straits Times (09.04.2019)  Organisations and companies could reduce occupational diseases by implementing engineering control through specific methods built into plant design, equipment and processes. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said engineering control was more effective than administrative control (or work practice control) and the use of personal protective equipment.
