Gig workers, from cleaners to cabbies, tackle "sexist" algorithms

Submitted by pmassetti on

reuters.com (25.09.2023) A report by rights group ActionAid released earlier this year showed that gig work algorithms discriminated against women who were “unable to respond as quickly or work as many hours as men because of unpaid care responsibilities”. The report, citing a survey of more than 5,000 gig workers in 15 countries, also showed that women tend to work fewer hours than men - contributing to a wage gap - as safety concerns lead many to shun work that falls after dark or in risky locations

Joining Forces for Gender Equality : What is Holding us Back?

Submitted by pmassetti on

OECD iLibrary (May 2023) OECD countries continue to face persistent gender inequalities in social and economic life. Young women often reach higher levels of education than young men, but remain under-represented in fields with the most lucrative careers. Women spend more time on unpaid work, face a strong motherhood penalty, encounter barriers to entrepreneurship and fare worse in labour markets overall. They are also under-represented in politics and leadership positions in public employment.

unicef (june 2021) The importance of mainstreaming gender into social protection policies and programmes is increasingly recognized. Towards a more gender-equitable COVID-19 response

Submitted by pmassetti on

Modern Diplomacy (31.08.01 ) As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to ripple across the world, they leave in their wake an upheaval touching all areas of public life. While all have been effected, no segment of the population has been impacted more, and in more varied ways, than women. The pandemic has shown scant regard for women’s socio-economic or marital status, for motherhood, occupation ethnicity or region of origin.

The Gendered Impacts of COVID-19 on Labor Markets in Latin America and the Caribbean

Submitted by pmassetti on

worldbank.org (05.05.2021) Progress in Latin America and the Caribbean over the last three decades has increased gender equality, notably in employment. With the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, however, necessary public health measures have put these gains in jeopardy. Throughout the pandemic thus far, women have been more likely than men to lose their jobs and less likely to regain them when conditions allow. Where families have school-age children, many more women than men have withdrawn from or lost work outside the home.
