Submitted by massetti on

The Government is being urged to close loopholes around the treatment of self-employed workers following intense scrutiny of gig-economy companies such as Deliveroo and Uber. A joint draft bill from the Work and Pensions and Business Committees has argued that there should be a new “worker by default” status, which requires companies to provide basic standards and benefits.

Preventing Ageing Unequally

Submitted by massetti on

This report examines how the two global mega-trends of population ageing and rising inequalities have been developing and interacting, both within and across generations. Taking a life-course perspective the report shows how inequalities in education, health, employment and earnings compound, resulting in large differences in lifetime earnings across different groups. It suggests a policy agenda to prevent, mitigate and cope with inequalities along the life course drawing on good practices in OECD countries and emerging economies.

Silicon Valley Pushes the Wrong Kind of Basic Income

Submitted by lasalle on

bloomberg.com (10.08.2017) ' People and nations don't have to accept a future in which a small group of companies -- and, let's face it, successful tech firms are a small, oligopolistic group -- controls the fruits of what they call progress. It's up to them to tax and regulate the monopolies and oligopolies. The opaque digital advertising business, for example, is under-regulated and possibly based on false claims about audience sizes. Killing U.S.
