[Opinion] Does the developing world need a welfare state to eliminate poverty? Some insights from history

Brookings Institution (30.06.2015) India today is already richer than Germany was when it introduced social insurance for all workers in the late 1880s. Indonesia is richer than the United States was in 1935, when the Social Security Act was passed. And China is richer than Britain was in 1948, when the National Health Service was introduced. So what can we learn from comparing developing countries today to richer countries when those countries were at equivalent levels of economic development?

Uganda: Govt Extends Senior Citizens Grant to 40 More Districts

allAfrica.com (24.08.2015) Government has expanded the social protection grants to cover the elderly in 40 more districts in addition to the present 15 districts. The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development Muruli Mukasa disclosed this in Kampala while announcing the roll-out of the assistance, also known as the Senior Citizens Grant, in which the non-pension beneficiaries aged 65 and above receive a monthly pay of Shs 25,000.

CNaPS – Fier-Mada : De la protection sociale pour les paysans!

midi-madagasikara.mg (08.08.2015) Même si les paysans représentent 80 % des Malgaches, ils font encore partie de ceux qui n’ont jamais bénéficié d’aucune protection sociale, alors que cela fait pleinement partie de leurs droits fondamentaux. C’est pour cela en quelque sorte que désormais, ces paysans font également partie des cibles de la Caisse Nationale de Prévoyance Sociale (CNaPS). «Nous devons penser à eux, ainsi qu’à leur avenir», ont affirmé les responsables de la Caisse. A cet effet, un projet sur la pension de retraite des paysans est en cours de réalisation.

[Opinion] L'allocation universelle contre la protection sociale

rtbf.be (14.05.2013) L'allocation universelle, un concept à la mode, aussi bien à droite qu'à gauche. Mais certains, comme le sociologue Mateo Alaluf, ne sont pas du tout d'accord avec cette idée. Pour lui, l'établissement d'une telle allocation entrainerait une régression sociale.
