Malta: Government unveils Coronavirus financial aid package

bdo.com.mt (18.03.2020) Financial assistance for families and unemployed persons: Where one of parents is required to stay at home to take care of children due to school closure and neither of the parents is able to telework– the Government will pay a benefit of €800 per month per family (expected to be for 2 months). Individuals which ended up unemployed due to the employer’s mandatory suspension of business, will benefit from 2 days per week based on a salary cap of €800 per month covered by government.

Malta: Ten days of paternity leave are ‘just the beginning’

timesofmalta (28.01.2019) The current one-day paternity leave is a huge injustice, according to the Association for Equality, welcoming an EU directive increasing the entitlement to 10 days and noting it is “the least fathers should be granted”. Though, by Maltese law, mothers can benefit from up to 18 weeks leave, fathers only enjoy a single day of birth leave.

Malta amongst lowest ratios of EU GDP spent on social protection

maltatoday (11.12.2017) While almost almost a third of EU GDP is spent on social protection, Malta’s expenditure has dropped over the years, sitting below the EU average in 2015 data S ocial protection expenditure stood at 17.5% in Malta in 2015, decreasing from 19.3% in 2010, Eurostat data shows.
Last week the the European Union's statistics office revealed that while social protection expenditure in the EU had increased slightly, from 28.6% of GDP in 2010 to 29.0%, Malta’s expenditure decreased.

Eurostat, the EU’s statistical agency, said today that social protection expenditure in the EU increased from 28.3 per cent of the GDP in 2011 to 28.7 per cent in 2014.

Despite the increase, spending on social protection was down as a percentage of total expenditure when compared to previous years.
