Freelancers are expected to make up a majority of the U.S. workforce by 2027 — and a new startup is aiming to patch up a big hole in the safety net for this demographic.

Trupo, which launched Tuesday, is a new insurance company that specializes in short-term disability insurance for freelancers and other self-employed people. The company is co-owned by Freelancers Union, a non-profit organization providing advocacy, insurance benefits and other resources for freelancers, and venture capital firm Sequoia Capital. Initially, it will start providing coverage for consumers in Atlanta, before spreading to other cities.
