How to claim £144 if you've been working from home

People who have worked from home since the start of the pandemic lockdown could be in line to claim £144 from the UK Government.

The money is available to cover the extra expense of working from home - such as electricity and heating bills.

You can claim £24 a month tax back on extra costs - meaning that if you've worked from home since March, you might be in line for as much as £144.

HMRC says it will consider claims from employees working at home due to coronavirus measures if their usual workplace is closed. To claim, you simply need to speak with your employer, as bosses can pay you £6 extra a week - tax-free. But if you feel uncomfortable, given the state of the economy and uncertainty surrounding workplaces, you can claim it directly to the HMRC. The money may be given to you as a reduction in tax you pay - rather than as a refund.
