Design, implementation and evaluation of specific strategies to prevent and reduce worker absenteeism and sick leaves

Often, the interests of workers and employers are not the same, so addressing absenteeism as it relates to the health and safety of workers is an ethical and social commitment.

This good practice aims to reduce absenteeism arising from respiratory, musculoskeletal, mental and cardiac diseases, which are among the most frequent conditions among workers of the Catholic Workers’ Circle of the Uruguay Mutual Fund (Círculo Católico de Obreros del Uruguay Mutualista – CCOUM).

A multidisciplinary approach and the cooperation of union and business representatives are necessary conditions to achieve commitment and adherence to the programs and measures developed. It is also essential to standardize information as an ongoing practice in order to be able to evaluate and plan the ensuing strategies with a forward-looking vision.

The programs developed are based on the premise that the reduction of the preventable aspect of absenteeism due to illness favours the worker’s return to work, a good working environment and the overall promotion of a work culture.
