Payments in quarantine

The Directorate of Labor handles the implementation of the Act on Temporary Payments for Persons Affected with Quarantine. The purpose of the Act is to support employers who pay employees who are paid quarantine wages when other rights, such as sick leave under collective agreements, do not apply. In this way, it is intended that individuals can follow the instructions of the health authorities on quarantine without worrying about their results.

The Act applies to payments to employers who have paid employees who are quarantined salaries during the period from February 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020. Employees who have quarantined but have not been paid their employer can also apply for payments under the Act. In addition, self-employed persons can apply for payments. Applications for payments must be received by the Directorate of Labor before 31 December 2020.

Conditions for payments

Requirements for payments include that an individual has probably been quarantined according to direct instructions from the health authority and that he has not been able to perform part or all of the work from where he quarantined. The law generally assumes that quarantine lasts for 14 days and there is a certain maximum amount of payment for each working day that an individual quarantined. The Agency draws attention to the fact that only the paid working days should have been paid to the person concerned. Applications for quarantine payments were opened on 5 May 2020.

Application for quarantine payments

Employees and self-employed persons apply for payments on my jobseeker's pages
Employers apply for payments through my employers' sites.   Employers who intend to apply for payment must therefore obtain an ISK key or electronic ID for their business operations. It will facilitate and ensure the security of information that employers will need to send to the Directorate of Labor. Here you can find information about Íslykil, see https://vefur.island.is/islykill/ , or electronic identification, see https://www.skilriki.is/
