Panorama Laboral 2016: Unemployment increased sharply in Latin America and the Caribbean

ILO (15.12.2016) The average unemployment rate reached 8.1 per cent, according to the annual report. There are 25 million people who are looking for work without success. The quality of employment has also deteriorated because of an increase in informality and self-employment. The impact on young people is of particular concern.

ILO (15.12.2016) El informe anual dice que la tasa de desocupación promedio llegó a 8,1%. Hay 25 millones de personas que buscan trabajo sin conseguirlo. Al mismo tiempo hay un deterioro en la calidad del trabajo por el aumento de la informalidad y el trabajo por cuenta propia. La situación de los jóvenes es preocupante.

CEPAL (17.01.2017) Después de dos años consecutivos de contracción económica, se proyecta que América Latina y el Caribe retorne a un crecimiento positivo en 2017, pero persistirán importantes dificultades tanto externas como internas, según el informe de las Naciones Unidas Situación y Perspectivas de la Economía Mundial (WESP, por sus siglas en ingles), publicado hoy.

El País (26.01.2017) La reciente publicación de la Encuesta de Población Activa, por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística, muestra cómo el número de ocupados en nuestro país se ha reducido en 19.400 personas en el cuarto trimestre de 2016 con respecto al trimestre anterior, si bien esto no ha redundado en un aumento de la tasa de paro, que cae un 0,28% para situarse en el 18,63%.

Universal health coverage 'prevented cancer death increase' in economic crisis

Medical News Today (26.05.2016) In the first analysis of its kind, researchers find that unemployment and reduced public sector healthcare spend in the 2008-2010 global economic crisis is linked to an increase in cancer deaths. They also find universal healthcare coverage appears to protect against this effect.

Houston Chronicle (15.05.2016) The economic crisis in this country has exploded into a public health emergency, claiming the lives of untold numbers of Venezuelans. It is just part of a larger unraveling here that has become so widespread it has prompted President Nicolás Maduro to impose a state of emergency and has raised fears of a government collapse.
