The results of the NLST (National Lung Screening Trial) study showed that the use of Low Dose Spiral Computer Tomography with persons with a significantly increased risk of lung cancer can reduce the mortality risk by identifying lung cancer at an earlier stage than the use of conventional X-rays. At the end of 2011 the SUVA decided to offer this possibility on a voluntary basis to those of its insured members who had been exposed to asbestos and had a similar risk of developing lung cancer. The programme started in 2012. Following examination by the relevant works medical officer the SUVA allocated persons who had been previously exposed to asbestos in the age group 55-75 on the basis of this earlier exposure to asbestos or of having smoked and who thus had the same level of risk of developing lung cancer as the NLST study group.
